BRC Takes Home a Win
Posted Sunday April 1, 2018
For the third week in a row, BRC played a D1A college side in a pre-season game. The game with the University of Buffalo (UB) was a late addition to BRC's schedule when UB's original opponent bailed out on them on Thursday. Despite the late notice, BRC assembled a squad of 17 that included a mixture of D2 and D3 players that traveled to Kunz Field on the UB campus. Playing with the wind, UB controlled play for the first 20 minutes of the game and ran in two tries to take a 10-0 lead. BRC answered back with a try from Dave Piraino that was converted by Kyle Johannsenn (10-7, UB). BRC edged into the lead when James Stewart barged over the line and Johannsenn made the conversion (14-10, BRC). UB stormed back as Luca Wrabetz (a BRC Devo and 7s player in the summer) scored two tries that he converted putting UB in the lead at 24-14. Near the end of the half, a sustained attack provided good, quick ball and Jacob Hierl scored a try that Johannsenn converted to make the score 24-21, UB, at the half.
Playing with the wind in the second half, BRC turned up the pressure. On attack, the club controlled the ball for long periods of time, staying with the pattern of play. On defense, the line speed was increased and two man tackles become the norm. The combined improvement on both sides of the ball meant BRC dominated in the second half. On offense, tries were scored by Cory Ratka, Ben Carroll, Mike Lang, and Johannsenn. Johannsenn added two more conversions to give BRC a solid 45-24 win. Matt Webber had a very good game at scrum half, running the attack and organizing the defense. He didn't score but had 4 assists leading to tries. Overall BRC showed glimpses of how it can play rugby. With the first play-off games just two weeks away, the club needs to build on Saturday's effort.
