The Buffalo Rugby Club D2 and D3 sides ended their fall league season with winning efforts and identical 7-1 records.
D2 Buffalo 30 Syracuse 17
D3 Buffalo 63 Binghamton 10
The D3 side played Binghamton at home. Binghamton has struggled all fall with numbers and this past weekend was no different as they arrived at Delaware Park with 11 healthy players. Thus, the game was a forfeit win for the D3 side. However, a "friendly match" was played as several Canisius College players filled out the Binghamton team. In that game, the D3 side ran out to a 63-10 win with everyone getting plenty of playing time as both teams agreed to rolling subs.
The D2 side traveled to Syracuse with first place in the league guaranteed. However, a bonus point win would help determine seeding for the EGU spring play-offs. For 20 minutes, Buffalo controlled the ball and territory but Syracuse defended every attack. Against the run of play, Syracuse intercepted a pass and ran 70 meters for a try that was converted and had a 7-0 lead. Staying with the game plan, Buffalo kept their heads and controlled the play scoring 17 points on 2 converted tries and a penalty kick. Syracuse closed the gap to 17-12 at the half scoring a try with no time left in the half. Not discouraged, the team talk at half time was to stay focused and don't panic. The team responded scoring 2 more tries and a penalty kick to grab the try bonus point and a 30-12 lead. Syracuse scored another try with no time left in the game to make the score look closer than the game was, a 30-17 win for Buffalo.
Now both the D2 and D3 teams wait to see who their opponents will be in the spring play-off. D2 has secured at least a 3rd seed in the 8 team playoff. D3 seeding is still up in the air.
