The Buffalo Rugby Club and the Patel family have established The Kamil Patel - Buffalo Rugby Scholarship which is dedicated to honoring the memory of Kamil Patel. The scholarship was created in the spring of 2018 to assist high school rugby players who plan to continue their education in college while playing rugby. Renewable scholarships of up to $500 are offered each year for full-time study at an accredited institution of the student’s choice. The maximum value of the scholarship is $2000.
Kamil was a multi-sport athlete in high school. He started playing rugby with his brother Dannish and friends on the Kenmore East community-based high school team. He went on to play at the University of Buffalo and with the Buffalo Rugby Men’s Club.
Although Kamil was a very good athlete and an exceptional rugby player, it was not those attributes which endeared him to his coaches, teammates, family, and friends.
Kamil was the exceptional individual who thrived on bringing people together. He always had a smile. He was inclusive, positive, supportive and eager for the next adventure. Kamil’s joy for life and his love for people made him an unforgettable person within our rugby community. His unbelievable ability to make those around him laugh and smile will never be forgotten.
In January 2018, a week before his 30th birthday, his life was ended in a random act of violence in Miami Beach Florida.
Our hope is the memory of Kamil will be sustained in part by the awarding of this scholarship to students, who follow in his footsteps, loving rugby and taking advantage of the opportunity it provides to bring people together and help them grow.
This scholarship program is administered by the Buffalo Rugby Club, a 501c3 nonprofit organization. Awards are granted without regard to race, color, creed, religion, sexual orientation, gender, disability or national origin.
Candidates are nominated by their rugby coach. To be considered, a player must be a high school senior who plans to enroll in college and to play rugby.
If selected, the student will receive an annual award up to $500. Awards may be renewed up to three years or until a bachelor’s degree is earned, whichever occurs first. Renewal is contingent upon satisfactory academic performance in a full-time course of study and continued participation in a rugby team or club.
In early September the scholarship winner will confirm full-time enrollment and participation in rugby. A check written payable to the school bursar will be sent to the home address of the scholarship recipient.
The coaches of all RugbyNY high school teams will be invited to nominate a candidate from their team. The coach should make their nomination based primarily on the intangible personal attributes set out in the program description.
Upon receipt of the nomination from the coach, the BRC will contact the candidate to invite them to complete an application.
A committee will review the applications and pick a scholarship winner based on the application and input from the player’s coach.
Scholarship applicants will be judged first on the basis of coach’s nomination, then secondarily on academic record, school and community activities, honors, work experience, the exceptional circumstances.
All information received is considered confidential and is reviewed only by the review committee established by the Buffalo Rugby Club (to include representatives from RugbyNY).
The winner(s), coach and team will be announced to all members of RugbyNY , Empire GU and the Buffalo Rugby Club.
Recipients have no obligation to the Buffalo Rugby Club. They are, however, required to notify the Buffalo Rugby Club of any changes in address, school enrollment, participation in rugby or other relevant information and to send a complete transcript if requested.
This scholarship program is endorsed by RugbyNY, the USA Rugby sanctioned youth rugby organization for all of New York State.
The Buffalo Rugby Club reserves the right to review the conditions and procedures of this scholarship program and to make changes at any time including termination of the program.
